The National Vice Chairman (South-East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, has warmly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant upward review of the annual hazard allowance for non-teaching staff in federal universities, raising it to ₦486,000 for eligible workers.
Arodiogbu described the decision as another clear demonstration of the President’s genuine commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers, particularly those in the education sector who operate in high-risk environments such as laboratories, workshops, studios, and clinical settings.
According to a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission dated July 20, 2026, and taking retrospective effect from January 1, 2026:
- Workers on CONTISS 6–15 will now receive ₦486,000 annually as laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowance.
- Staff on CONTISS 1–5 will receive ₦243,000 annually.
In a statement reacting to the development, Dr. Arodiogbu praised President Tinubu for prioritising the welfare of university workers despite the challenging economic climate.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to show that the welfare of Nigerian workers is close to his heart. Raising the annual hazard allowance for university workers to ₦486,000 is a progressive and people-centred decision. It recognises the risks faced daily by non-teaching staff who keep our universities running,” Arodiogbu said.
He noted that the approval would boost morale among non-academic staff and contribute to industrial harmony in the nation’s tertiary institutions. The APC South-East leader urged university workers to reciprocate the government’s gesture with increased dedication and productivity.
Arodiogbu further described the move as consistent with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, which has continued to implement progressive labour reforms, including the new national minimum wage and other welfare packages for public sector workers.
Dr. Arodiogbu urged university workers to reciprocate the Federal Government’s gesture with renewed commitment, professionalism and dedication to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
He also called on Nigerians to continue supporting President Tinubu’s reform agenda, expressing confidence that the administration’s policies would deliver lasting benefits for workers, students and the nation at large.
