Arodiogbu Hails Gallant Security Forces for Rescue of 20 Prospective NYSC Corps Members and Civilian in Imo State

In a strong show of support for Nigeria’s security architecture, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the National Vice Chairman (South East), All Progressive Congress has warmly commended the gallant officers of the Nigerian Military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force and other collaborating agencies for the successful rescue of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian who were held captive for seven days in Imo State.

Speaking on the development, Dr. Arodiogbu praised the professionalism, intelligence-driven coordination and courage displayed by the joint security team. He described the operation as a clear demonstration of the renewed commitment of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the safety and security of every Nigerian, regardless of location or status.

He assured citizens that the President remains fully focused on protecting lives and property across the country and will continue to empower security agencies with the resources and support needed to confront criminal elements.

The dramatic rescue took place on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, when joint forces stormed a kidnap den at Amakohia Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State. All 21 captives were freed unharmed and immediately taken to a DSS facility in Owerri, where they are receiving medical attention and psychosocial care.

The ordeal began on 1 October when the young graduates, travelling in two buses from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom States, were ambushed by armed men along the Owerri-Onitsha Road near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area. The gunmen whisked the victims into the forest, plunging their families into days of anxiety and uncertainty.

Security agencies immediately launched a painstaking, intelligence-led search-and-rescue mission. Operatives tracked the kidnappers through difficult forested terrain, overcame logistical and operational challenges, and eventually located the hideout. In a carefully executed operation that prioritised the safety of the captives, the joint team secured the release of all 21 individuals without further harm.

NYSC Director-General Brigadier-General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu personally visited the survivors at the DSS clinic in Owerri. He was joined by the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the state Director of the DSS, and the Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade. The presence of the top officials underscored the importance the authorities attached to the welfare of the rescued corps members.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma also applauded the security agencies for their professionalism and the discreet manner in which the operation was handled. The Nigeria Police Force has officially confirmed the successful rescue and stated that the manhunt for the abductors remains active. Officers have vowed that the criminals will be brought to justice.

Arodiogbu used the occasion to reiterate the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance stance on kidnapping and other violent crimes. He noted that the successful operation reflects the improved synergy among the military, DSS, police and other security outfits under the current administration.

He called on Nigerians to continue supporting the security agencies with timely information while assuring the nation that President Tinubu’s commitment to securing every part of the country remains unwavering.

The release of the 20 prospective corps members and the civilian has brought immense relief to their families and the wider public. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to celebrate the gallant efforts of the security forces and to express gratitude for the safe return of the young graduates who were on their way to serve the nation.

As the survivors recover and prepare to resume their journey into national service, the security agencies continue their pursuit of the kidnappers. Authorities have promised that no effort will be spared until those responsible for the abduction are apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law.

This successful rescue stands as a major boost for national morale and a testament to the determination of Nigeria’s security forces to protect the lives of ordinary citizens. Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the message is clear: the safety and security of all Nigerians remain a top priority.
