The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Chief Ralph Obioha, describing him as a towering democracy icon, fearless patriot, and one of the finest products of Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle whose life of sacrifice continues to inspire generations.
In a heartfelt statement issued in the wake of Obioha’s passing on October 3, 2026, at the age of 80, Arodiogbu expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the elder statesman, former Second Republic lawmaker, businessman, and founding leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). He hailed the late chief as a man of uncommon courage who stood firm when it was dangerous to speak truth to power.
“Chief Ralph Obioha was not just a politician or a businessman; he was a true democrat in the purest sense of the word,” Arodiogbu stated. “At a time when many chose silence or convenience, he chose principle. He risked his freedom, his comfort, and his personal safety so that Nigeria could reclaim its democratic destiny after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. His name will forever be written in gold in the annals of our nation’s struggle for freedom and good governance.”
The APC South-East leader recalled Obioha’s pivotal role in the external wing of NADECO. Operating from Canada and the United States during the dark years of military rule, the late chief mobilised international support, engaged foreign legislatures, and kept the flame of the June 12 mandate alive when it seemed the military junta would permanently extinguish it. Arodiogbu noted that Obioha’s efforts, alongside other patriots, helped sustain global pressure that eventually contributed to the restoration of democratic rule in 1999.
Beyond the pro-democracy trenches, Arodiogbu highlighted Obioha’s earlier service as a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic (1979–1983), his founding and leadership of the Justice Party, and his role as Chairman of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee. He described these as further evidence of a life devoted to public service, Igbo unity, and national development.
“Chief Obioha belonged to that rare generation of Nigerians who answered the call of duty at the most difficult moments in our history,” Arodiogbu said. “He believed, and lived the belief, that Nigeria’s future is inseparable from democracy, justice, constitutionalism, and the right of the people to choose their leaders. Even when the cost was high, he never wavered.”
The APC National Vice Chairman also acknowledged the recognition of Obioha’s sacrifices by the Federal Government earlier in 2026, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu conferred a national honour on him as a June 12 hero. Arodiogbu described the honour as well-deserved, even as he noted that the late statesman’s true reward lay in the democratic space Nigerians now enjoy because of the sacrifices of men and women like him.
Extending deep condolences to the Obioha family, the people of Arondizuogu, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the wider Igbo community, NADECO comrades, and all Nigerians mourning the loss, Arodiogbu prayed that God grants the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and that the soul of the departed rests in perfect peace.
“As a party committed to democratic values and progressive ideals, the All Progressives Congress joins the nation in mourning this great son of Nigeria,” he added. “We urge the younger generation to study the life of Chief Ralph Obioha. His courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to a better Nigeria remain a shining example for all of us who still believe that this country can and must work for its people.”
Chief Ralph Obioha, fondly remembered as Okpuruisizuruoha II of Arondizuogu, left behind a rich legacy that spans business enterprise, legislative service, cultural leadership, and, above all, the defence of democratic ideals. His passing has drawn tributes from across the political spectrum, including from President Bola Tinubu, who described him as a courageous Nigerian whose sacrifices must never be forgotten.
As Nigeria co ntinues to navigate the challenges of nation-building, the glowing tribute from the APC National Vice Chairman serves as a timely reminder that the democracy Nigerians enjoy today was purchased at a great price by men and women of principle like the late Chief Ralph Obioha.
