A BEACON OF DEMOCRATIC EXCELLENCE: CELEBRATING THE APC STATE CONGRESSES IN IMO AND THE SOUTHEAST

A BEACON OF DEMOCRATIC EXCELLENCE: CELEBRATING THE APC STATE CONGRESSES IN IMO AND THE SOUTHEAST

By Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu

The recently concluded state congresses of the All Progressives Congress in Imo State and other south-eastern states stand as a shining beacon of political maturity and organizational excellence within Nigeria’s democratic terrain. These events, marked by an unprecedented level of coordination and inclusivity, have not only reinforced the party’s stronghold in the region but have also set a new standard for how political gatherings should be conducted in a nation striving for true democratic ideals. From the bustling venues in Imo where delegates gathered with enthusiasm to the equally vibrant assemblies in Enugu, Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi, every aspect of these congresses reflected a deep-seated commitment to unity and progress.

The seamless execution, from the registration of participants to the final tally of votes, demonstrated a meticulous planning process that left no room for ambiguity or discord. Delegates arrived with high spirits, knowing that their voices would be heard in an environment free from intimidation or manipulation, and this fostered a sense of belonging that is often elusive in political exercises. The atmosphere was electric yet orderly, with party faithful exchanging ideas on how to advance the region’s development agenda, all while adhering to the principles that define the APC as a forward-thinking entity. It is this very essence of diligence that permeated every stage of the congresses, ensuring that decisions were made not in haste but with careful consideration of the broader implications for the party’s future and the wellbeing of the people it serves.

Transparency was the cornerstone of these congresses, evident in the open processes that allowed for real-time verification of procedures. Observers from various walks of life were granted unfettered access to witness the proceedings, which in turn built public confidence in the outcomes. This approach not only minimized errors but also showcased the APC’s innovative spirit in embracing modern systems to enhance democratic practices. Fairness, too, was upheld with unwavering resolve, as the party enforced rules that prevented undue influence from any quarters, allowing merit and popular support to dictate the selection of leaders. Unlike other political parties where factionalism marred similar events, these congresses proceeded without hitches, thanks to the proactive measures taken by the national leadership to mediate potential conflicts beforehand.

The result was a harmonious convergence of diverse opinions, where even those who were not elected or returned expressed satisfaction with the process, pledging their continued loyalty to the party. Such outcomes are a testament to the APC’s unyielding dedication to these core values, setting it apart as a model for political organization in a country where many still grapple with internal divisions and procedural lapses.

Indeed, while the APC has mastered the art of conducting well-organized congresses that embody diligence, transparency, and fairness, other political parties continue to struggle in emulating these standards. Across the political spectrum, one often hears tales of chaotic congresses riddled with allegations of opaque decision-making, which erode public trust and hinder national progress. In contrast, the APC’s congresses, especially in the south-east, served as a masterclass in how to foster genuine participation, inspiring envy and admiration from observers who recognize the gap in operational efficiency.

This disparity highlights the APC’s superior institutional framework, built on years of refining its internal mechanisms to align with global best practices in democracy. The party’s ability to mobilize thousands of members across the southeast without descending into disorder speaks volumes about its disciplined cadre and strategic foresight. It is this commitment that positions the party as the vanguard of progressive politics in Nigeria, where diligence translates into tangible results, transparency builds lasting alliances, and fairness ensures that every voice, no matter how humble, contributes to the collective vision.

As these congresses wrapped up, the echoes of applause and chants of solidarity underscored a pivotal moment, one that reaffirms the APC’s role in steering the nation toward a more equitable future. The elected leaders from these congresses, particularly the state party Chairmen, emerge as exemplary figures deeply rooted in grassroots dynamics, possessing an innate orientation toward the needs and aspirations of ordinary citizens. These individuals are not distant elites but true representatives of the people, having risen through the ranks by demonstrating unwavering dedication to community service and party ideals.

In Imo State, the elected Chairman, Chief Austin Onyedebelu, embodies this grassroots ethos, with a track record of engaging directly with local wards to address pressing issues like infrastructure development and youth empowerment. Similarly, in Enugu, Dr. Martin Chukwunwike (a former PDP stalwart now bringing fresh energy to the APC), and in Abia, Chijioke Chukwu, bring first-hand experience from years of mobilizing at the community level, understanding the nuances of local politics that often escape those detached from the ground realities.

In Ebonyi and Anambra, the elected Chairmen, Stanley Okoro-Emegha (re-elected), and Senator Emmanuel Obiajulu Anosike, strongly believe in progressivism as they advocate for policies that promote inclusive growth, social justice, and economic reforms aligned with the APC’s manifesto. Progressivism, in the view of these elected leaders, is not an abstract concept but a lived commitment to fostering innovation and building resilient societies. These leaders have consistently championed initiatives that bridge urban-rural divides, ensuring that the benefits of governance reach the farthest corners of their states. Their election is a validation of the party’s merit-based system, where competence and ideological alignment take precedence over patronage.

Following the successful congresses, I presided over a strategic meeting with these five elected Chairmen in Enugu on March 5, 2026. The deliberations were focused, productive, and aligned on the path ahead. I am confident that they will work efficiently and tirelessly to preach the Renewed Hope Gospel at the grassroots, transforming abstract promises into concrete actions that resonate with everyday Nigerians and consequently, achieve a historic victory for President Tinubu in 2027 to consolidate the gains of Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Renewed Hope agenda, with its focus on economic revitalization, security enhancements, and social welfare, finds perfect ambassadors in these Chairmen and their teams. They will traverse villages, towns, and cities, engaging in dialogues that educate and inspire, showing how the party’s vision can alleviate poverty, create jobs, and improve living standards. Their efficiency stems from a profound understanding of time management and resource allocation, ensuring that every effort yields maximum impact. Tirelessly, they will campaign door-to-door, host community events, and utilize digital platforms to amplify the Renewed Hope narrative, making it accessible to all demographics.

This grassroots evangelism is crucial in a region rich with potential, and these leaders are poised to harness that energy for collective advancement. Their belief in progressivism will guide them to prioritize sustainable development over short-term gains, fostering a culture of accountability and innovation within the party structures.

As the dust settles on these successful congresses, it becomes evident that the APC’s growth in the southeast is no accident but the fruit of deliberate, visionary leadership. The party’s expansion from a nascent presence to a formidable force owes much to the strategic interventions that ensured inclusivity and meritocracy. Delegates left the venues not just with new leaders but with renewed vigour, ready to tackle the challenges of nation-building.

The congresses also highlighted the APC’s adaptability, incorporating feedback from previous exercises to refine processes, resulting in greater satisfaction. This iterative approach underscores the party’s learning culture, where diligence is not static but evolves to meet emerging needs. Transparency has cultivated a membership base that feels empowered, knowing that their contributions matter. Fairness has bridged ethnic and ideological gaps, uniting the southeast under the APC banner in ways that promote national cohesion.

Other parties, observing from afar, must now confront their own shortcomings, perhaps drawing lessons from the APC’s playbook to elevate their standards. Yet, the APC does not rest on laurels; these congresses are but a stepping stone toward greater achievements, with the elected leaders at the helm steering the ship with precision.

The grassroots orientation of these Chairmen ensures that the party’s policies remain grounded in reality. Their progressivist mindset will drive initiatives that empower women, youth, and entrepreneurs, aligning with the Renewed Hope pillars of innovation and equity. Efficiency in their operations will manifest through streamlined party activities, from membership drives to policy advocacy, maximizing limited resources for optimal outcomes. Tirelessly preaching the gospel means relentless engagement, turning sceptics into supporters through demonstrable actions.

I can’t end this without commending the National Leader of our great party, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continuous fatherly love and guidance. His administration also deserves lots of credit for the bold reforms that have transformed Nigeria’s economic terrain. Indeed, what he stopped is a monumental corruption in fuel subsidy and in arbitrage exchange rate practices that long plagued the nation.

These courageous steps have given the nation a stable economy, with inflation moderating, exchange rate stability improving, foreign reserves strengthening, and prosperity now beckoning on us all. Nigerians are proud of him for this visionary leadership that has laid the foundation for sustained growth and shared progress under the Renewed Hope agenda. Also, the Imo State Governor who is also the Chairman of South East Governors Forum, Progressive Governors Forum, and Renewed Hope Ambassador, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, for his giant actions to ensure that the party did not only organise free, fair, and transparent congresses in the region but also grow from strength to strength, is essential.

President Tinubu’s paternal oversight has been the guiding light, offering wisdom drawn from decades of political acumen to navigate complexities and foster unity. His interventions have inspired confidence, ensuring that our great party remains a cohesive force dedicated to national renewal, and his fatherly guidance exemplifies the synergy between national and regional visions, propelling the party toward enduring success.
